Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients for Blondies:

  • 1 1/3 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter melted, browned and cooled
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

Ingredients for Glaze:

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (sifted to get out any lumps)
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

For the Blondies

  • Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, allowing the paper to extend over the sides for easy removal.
  • Cream the Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, cream together the brown sugar, browned butter, syrup, vanilla, and eggs until light and fluffy.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking soda.
  • Mix Wet and Dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Bake: Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 23-27 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

For the Glaze

  • While the blondies bake, prepare the glaze. Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir in the syrup until combined. Remove from heat and whisk in sifted powdered sugar and salt until smooth.

  • Once the blondies are baked and cooled slightly, drizzle the glaze over the warm blondies. Let the glaze set before cutting into bars.

Brown butter is a simple but transformative ingredient that adds a rich, nutty flavor to a variety of dishes. It’s created by heating butter until the milk solids caramelize, resulting in a deep amber color and a nutty aroma.

Here’s how to brown butter:

  1. Melt the Butter: Place unsalted butter in a light-colored saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Watch the Foam: As the butter melts, it will start to foam. Keep a close eye on it and stir occasionally.
  3. Embrace the Aroma: The butter will begin to brown and emit a nutty aroma. This is the magic moment!
  4. Remove from Heat: Once the butter reaches a deep amber color, remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Cool and Store: Pour the browned butter into a heat-safe bowl and let it cool completely before using.

A Word of Caution:

  • Don’t Walk Away: Browning butter requires constant attention. Overheating can quickly lead to burnt butter, which can taste bitter.
  • Trust Your Senses: Use your nose and eyes to gauge the browning process. A deep amber color and a nutty aroma are signs of perfectly browned butter.
