How many times have you tried to peel a hard-boiled egg, only to end up with half the white stuck to the shell, leaving a ragged mess? Too many times, right?! Well, prepare to have your mind blown and your egg game changed forever.

We’ve got a simple, foolproof trick that guarantees a beautifully cooked yolk and a shell that practically slides off. This isn’t just about making your life easier (though it totally will!); it’s about ensuring your deviled eggs, egg salads, or even just a simple snack egg look as good as they taste. No more frustration, just perfect eggs every single time!

Ingredients

  • Eggs
  • Pot of Water
  • 1 Tbsp oil (any kind)

Instructions

  • Boil Water: Bring enough water to a boil in a pot to completely submerge your eggs. Add a tablespoon of olive or other oil to the water.
  • Add Eggs: Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to a gentle simmer (to prevent shells from breaking). Carefully add the eggs one at a time using a spoon.
  • Cook Eggs: Set a timer for 13 minutes for perfectly cooked, solid yolks without a gray ring.
  • Prepare Ice Bath: While the eggs cook, fill a bowl with plenty of ice and water, ensuring enough to cover all the eggs and keep the water very cold.
  • Transfer to Ice Bath: When the timer goes off, immediately transfer the cooked eggs from the boiling water directly into the ice bath. Let them cool for about 5 minutes.
  • Store or Peel: After cooling, remove the eggs from the ice bath. You can store them in the refrigerator or proceed to peel them.
  • Peel Easily: To peel, gently roll the egg on a counter to crack the shell all over. Peel the egg under running cold water; the water helps rinse away shell fragments and makes peeling easier.

FAQs about boiling eggs

  • Can I make these soft boiled? Sure! Just cook them for less time. For medium boiled, try 10 minutes, and for soft boiled, anywhere from 3-6 minutes, depending on how runny you want the yolk. Be extra gentle when peeling them.
  • Can I dye these eggs? Good question. My initial thought was that the dye wouldn’t stick quite as well because of the oil, after research found one person that had success with the dye sticking after wiping them off with a paper towel! Hooray!
  • Are there any other ways to make easy peel eggs? Boiling with oil is our favorite way to ensure easy peel eggs every time, but steaming them in a steamer basket over boiling water, rather than submerged, is our second favorite. Same time- 13 minutes once the water is boiling!)
  • Should I use old or new eggs? Some people say that using old eggs instead of new eggs helps with them being easy to peel- I have not found that to be true, at least with this method. In fact, if your eggs are old, the yolk may have sunk to the bottom of the eggs, making them more difficult to use for deviled eggs and such. Old or new eggs work with this.
