Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 cups milk (preferably whole or 2%)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup bittersweet or semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, combine the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar.

  • Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, whisking frequently, until the liquid is warm but do not let it boil.

  • Add the chocolate chips. Whisk constantly until the chocolate chips are completely melted and evenly distributed into the milk, creating a smooth, rich hot chocolate.

  • Remove from heat, whisk in the vanilla extract, and serve immediately.

Notes

Two Servings:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla

One Serving:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp chocolate chips
  • 1-2 drops vanilla

 

Options:

  • Feel free to add in other flavored extracts such as mint, orange, raspberry.
  • We added in some of our homemade toasted marshmallow syrups & loved it as well!
  • Top with whipped cream & a bit of cinnamon.
  • My wife loves it with milk chocolate instead of bittersweet or semi-sweet.
