Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 apples, cut up
  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1/3 cup lemon juice
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise pods
  • 15 whole whole cloves, or 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar, optional (but my wife added a LOT more to her cup)
  • 1/8 tsp allspice

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients, including the apples, to a large pot over medium low heat.
  • Bring to a simmer.  Simmer for 30-45 minutes.
  • Pour wassail into a pitcher or large bowl using a strainer to remove the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and star anise pods.
  • Ladle into mugs and enjoy!

Notes

  • My wife added another 1 Tbsp of brown sugar to her cup but I enjoyed mine as is.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.  You can also make this in advance and store in the refrigerator until ready to heat and enjoy.
  • To reheat: you can use the stovetop, microwave, or slow cooker to bring it back up to the temperature you desire.
