Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients for Naan:

  • 1/2 c warm water
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 c plain yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/23 c all purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp butter, melted
  • 2 tsp minced garlic

Ingredients for finish (optional):

  • 2 Tbsp melted butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • cilantro, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir them together, then let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it becomes bubbly and foamy.

  2. Mix the Dough Base: Add the olive oil, yogurt, egg, and salt to the bubbly yeast mixture. Stir in 2 cups of flour until the mixture is smooth.

  3. Knead the Dough: Gradually add just enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured counter and knead it for a few minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.

  4. First Rise: Lightly grease a bowl, then place the dough inside. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size.

  5. Preheat Skillet: While the dough is rising or shortly before shaping, preheat a large skillet (cast iron works great!) over medium heat.

  6. Shape the Naan: Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down and divide it into eight equal pieces. On a floured surface, roll out each piece into a 6-inch circle or oval.

  7. Cook the Naan: Add a little oil or non-stick spray to the preheated skillet. Cook each naan circle for 2-3 minutes on one side, or until bubbles appear on the surface and the bottom is golden brown. Flip the naan and cook for another 2-3 minutes until cooked through and golden spots appear.

  8. Optional Finishing Touch: For extra flavor, immediately after cooking, brush the warm naan with a mixture of melted butter, minced garlic, and fresh cilantro.

  9. Serve: Serve the homemade naan warm and enjoy!
